Simeonov’s Math Circle

Simeonov’s Math Circle are mathematics courses for interested students ages 10-14. In these courses, we focus on different topics of mathematics – geometry, arithmetic, and algebra as well as topics that are not often explored fully in schools, such as topology, combinatorics, and logic. For these topics (and many more), students can join without prior knowledge and explore interesting investigations and gain exciting insights.

The goal of the courses is to gradually and continuously delve deeper into mathematics to get to know the richness and fascination of the field. We start with familiarizing ourselves and then getting to better know the subject. Although mathematics is conceptual and often takes place in our heads, there are many practical and concrete ways to access and understanding such as through games. Working concentratedly over a longer period of time brings results and a feeling that you want to experience again and again. That’s what these courses are all about – getting used to the way mathematics works and experiencing as often as possible the feeling of truly understanding and even mastering mathematics.

In the courses, exciting problems from different areas of mathematics are explored together based on participants’ interests and goals. These problems include proofs of mathematical theorems, open-ended tasks as well as very specific tasks from mathematics competitions, such as the German Mathematics Olympiad, Kangaroo of Mathematics, and other competitions for this age group. We support participation in such competitions as this can be an extra incentive for children to engage with the subject. We also occasionally invite guest mathematicians who introduce new topics for which we specifically prepare.

These courses are aimed at all learners aged 10-14 (regardless of school type). We would like to especially invite girls and children with migration backgrounds as well as children with special needs to participate to strengthen their interest in STEM subjects. One of the groups is English-speaking.

The prerequisite for participation in the Math Circle are interest and readiness to actively engage. Prior knowledge or indicators of success are not relevant. Anyone with interest and commitment will benefit from these courses.

The courses focus on these topics of mathematics:

  • Geometry
  • Arithmetic
  • Algebra
  • Topology
  • Combinatorics
  • Logic
  • and more
